Man kills girlfriend's family's dog, arrested
Police arrested a 20-year-old Arvada man last week for allegedly killing his girlfriend's dog while she and her family were driving to California.
At 1:27 a.m. Dec. 4, Arvada officers answered the report of a burglary in the 6900 block of Otis Street. A 21-year-old man said he would meet officers at a nearby school.
When officers arrived he said he had been drinking whiskey at the Otis Street house earlier with a 20-year-old man. He said the man was staying at the home while the occupants, his girlfriend and her parents, were on a trip to California.
He said that earlier he left the man to visit a friend. When he returned, he said, he entered the home and said it appeared ransacked, and that he found the family's dog, a terrier named Blaze, dead on the garage floor with two or three arrows in its body. He said he left the house and called police. On the way to the house, he told police the man owned bows and arrows.
When police arrived at the residence, they noticed the dog's body, and also that some of the furniture in the house was smashed. They found the man in the basement, where he was arrested.
The man was charged with aggravated animal cruelty — a felony — and underage possession and use of alcohol. He is being held at the Jefferson County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
