A Westchester County police chief is
proving his work is no desk job: He helped arrest a robbery
suspect.
Mount Vernon Police Commissioner David Chong and Deputy Chief
James Dumser were retuning to headquarters from a school visit
Thursday when they heard about a search for two suspects in a
street mugging. Chong and Dumser jumped into a patrol car and began
looking.
Chong says they spotted someone who matched one suspect's
description running through a park and followed him on foot. Chong
says the 16-year-old suspect ducked into a bathroom and then tried
to escape, but the commissioner grabbed him. Other officers
formally arrested him on a felony robbery charge. A second,
17-year-old suspect was arrested elsewhere.
Chong credits his officers. He says he "just happened to be out
there."
