Costanzo J. Battista, 99, of Schenectady, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 9, 2009. Born in Schenectady on August 28, 1909, he was the son of the late Antonio and Lucia Incoronata (nee: De Simone) Battista. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools. He was a communicant of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Schenectady. He was employed by General Electric Co. in Schenectady as a mechanical designer for many years until his retirement in 1974. Costanzo was a member of General Electric's Quarter Century Club and a former member of Schenectady Symphony Orchestra. He was an accomplished musician, composer and instructor, playing the violin, classical guitar and mandolin. He was an outdoor enthusiast and particularly enjoyed fly-fishing. Married on September 24, 1938, he was predeceased on February 11, 2006 by his wife of 65 years, Carmella Virginia (nee: Mauriello) Battista. He is also predeceased by his daughter, Diana Blanchard. Survivors include his son, Richard (Gail) Battista of Guilderland; seven grandchildren, Gina (Frank) Murray, Tony Battista, Jennifer (Dave) Szpila, Angel Charles, Steven Battista, Lisa (Tony) Brown and Christopher Blanchard; six great-grandchildren, Krista, Kayla, Carmella, Chelsea, Lucy and Natalie; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the caring staff, doctors, and many caregivers of Eddy Senior Care and the PACE Program, especially, Mark, Amanda, Gay, Kelly and Dr.Barkowski, all of whom made it possible for Costanzo to live comfortably at home. Funeral services will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. to be celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 2777 Albany St., Schenectady. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Schenectady. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home with a Legacy Candle Ceremony to be held at 7:30 p.m. that will feature a musical piece written by Costanzo.
