Mary Ellen (Murphy) Zemeck passed away on June 26, 2009. Mary was born in
Schenectady in 1926 to Irish immigrants, Mary (Cox) Murphy and Thomas Murphy.
She graduated from Nott Terrace High School and was married to Edward Zemeck,
until his death in 1995. Mary was employed for many years at the Schenectady
Answering Service and later as a crossing guard with the Schenectady Police
Department. Mary was an active parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church in
Schenectady. She was a member of the Rosary Society, the Pastoral Care Society
and Catholic Daughters. She was a proud member of the Schenectady Ancient Order
of Hibernians and their ladies auxiliary. Mary lived in Schenectady until
recently moving to the Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in
Scotia. Mary was predeceased by her brothers, William and Joseph Murphy; and her
sister, Sister Anna Murphy. Mary is survived by her three children and their
families, Edward and his wife, Toni of Niskayuna, Patricia Jornov and her
husband, Stephen of Lebanon, PA, and Eileen and her husband, Michael Comley of
Scotia; her grandchildren, Heather and Matthew Zemeck, Lisa and Karin Jornov and
Lauren, Elizabeth and Meredith Comley. She is also survived by her
sister-in-law, Mrs. Joseph (Ellie) Murphy; her niece, Patricia Begbie; and her
nephew, Thomas Murphy. Mary had many treasured friends. Her family and friends
will miss her quick Irish wit. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the
funeral which will begin Tuesday morning at 9:45 at the Gleason Funeral Home,
730 Union Street, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, where the
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Monday
evening from 5 until 8 at the funeral home. The Ladies Ancient Order of
Hibernians will meet at the funeral home Monday evening at 7. The St. John the
Evangelist Church Rosary Society will meet at the funeral home Monday evening at
7:30. Burial will be at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. In lieu of
flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church,
816 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308 or to Catholic Charities of Schenectady
County, 818 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308 or to the Sisters of the Holy Name,
1073 New Scotland Ave., Albany, NY 12208.
