Police said they have caught a man who was on the run after he dumped a container of 370-degree frying oil over his ex-girlfriend, causing severe burns to much of her body.
The man was angry because she had been seeing another man, said local police. They described the assault as one of the most brutal they have seen.
The man charged in the assault — Oscar Rodas, 23, of 82 Bennington St., Lawrence — has been on the run since Oct. 27 when he dumped the oil on the woman, investigators said. Police said they received a tip Rodas was staying in Yonkers, N.Y., and officers there raided a home and arrested him Wednesday.
Rodas and his ex-girlfriend — a Lawrence woman in her early 30s whom police are not identifying — worked a night shift together at the Dunkin Donuts factory in the Ward Hill Business Park in Haverhill, said Det. John Moses, who investigated the case. Moses said that on Oct. 27, just before midnight, Rodas took a container and scooped up some of the extremely hot oil that is used to cook doughnuts at the factory. He then poured it over the ex-girlfriend's head, fled the factory and left his Lawrence home, Moses said.
"It was one of the most horrific things I've seen in 20 years'' on the Police Department, Moses said.
He said the oil caused severe burns over 35 percent of the woman's body. She was taken to a Boston hospital, where she was treated. Moses said he does not know whether the woman has been released from the hospital. He said he does not believe her vision was affected by the oil.
Moses said the problem between Rodas and the woman began when they split up, but quickly grew much worse than most domestic disputes. He said he did not know how long they had been dating before the breakup.
"The victim had started seeing someone else and this suspect was upset about that,'' Moses said.
When asked whether Rodas has a criminal record, police said they are still investigating his background and are not releasing that information at this time, but they pointed out he is known to have five aliases.
He is charged with mayhem and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The mayhem charge is a felony and can carry a prison term of 20 years.
Moses said a special fugitive tracking team from the Yonkers area received word from Haverhill police about Rodas' location and used a warrant to arrest him. He is expected to be returned to Haverhill by next week to face the charges in Haverhill District Court.
