Dale Curtis Covey, a 53 year resident of Hemet, passed away on October 24th, at the age of 80, while enjoying the fall colors in Idyllwild. An adored husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Dale was a man who treasured his family as much as they will always treasure him. He leaves behind the rich legacy of a man who lived his life with the greatest devotion to his family, church, community, and country. The son of Harold and Ruth Covey, Dale was born May 15, 1928 in Anaheim, CA. He grew up in a time when Anaheim was a rural community of orange groves. Dale was the youngest of four children: brothers Tom and Hardin, and his sister Bunny McGranahan. Like many young men at the time, Dale left high school to enroll in the military during WWII. He served with honor in the Merchant Marines, the Marine Corps, and the Army Reserve in the Pacific Theater, separating in 1953. Dale was deeply patriotic and always spoke with the highest pride of all the men and women who serve our country. In 1950, Dale married his first wife, Marjorie Dickerson. After finishing college with a degree in agronomy at UC Davis, he moved his young family to the Hemet Valley, where he worked first as an agronomist and later as an educator. Dale and Marjorie had eight children together. Dale loved educating children, including his own, and spent 33 years as a teacher and principal for Hemet Unified School District. One of his most cherished experiences in his "retirement" years was mentoring new teachers through Cal. State San Bernardino's student-teacher program. After the death of his first wife in 1980, Dale was blessed by finding love a second time. In 1981, he married fellow educator, Phyllis Horney (nee Earp), mother of two sons, who encouraged and guided his spiritual journey to Christianity and with whom he lovingly shared the remainder of his life. Together, they shared a loving, active marriage, continuing to embark on adventures even up to Dale's Home going day. A charter member of the Hemet Harmonizers, Dale loved the music and harmonies of barbershop. He was instrumental in establishing a permanent home for the chorus at Mt. San Jacinto College and enjoyed participating in the Harmonizers' annual performances. Dale spent his last day on yet another adventure with Phyllis, admiring the beauty of the changing seasons. True to form and faith, after planting vegetables in his garden, Dale took Phyllis to the mountains. He talked about all the blessings in his life and how much he loved his family. Dale is survived by his wife Phyllis, his children and step-children Captain Dana Curtis Covey, Medical Corps, U.S. Navy (Lynn); Pamela Covey Radsch (Peter); Dr. Lori Covey Nichols (James); Marcia Covey Montoya (Rafael); Kris Covey (Cassandra); Rebecca Covey (Aaron Alpern); Todd Covey (Dr. Raquel Izumi); Angeline Covey Overend (Bill); Marc Horney (Cindy); Kevin Van Horne (Tanya); 21 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. We are blessed to have had Dale as a father, teacher, mentor and friend, and will remember him always with the greatest love. Celebration of Life services will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 11am, at Bible Fellowship Church in Hemet. The Covey family invites friends and family to honor Dale's memory through the Dale C. Covey Memorial Educational Scholarship Fund c/o Bank of Hemet, 1600 E. Florida Ave. Hemet, CA 94904.
