Carlsbad Police helped arrest dozens of suspects and confiscate illegal drugs this weekend during a multi-agency sweep.

Local Carlsbad police officers joined more than 250 law enforcement personnel this weekend in "Operation Tidal Wave," arresting 49 people and seizing thousands of dollars worth of illegal drugs and contraband.

The multi-agency sweep focused on drug smuggling, human trafficking and other cross-border crimes committed by North County gangs. Local Crime reports had Sheriff's officials saying the sweep netted five documented gang members.

While the focus of the raid was gang-related illegal activities, the scores of officers carrying it out July 30 from 5 p.m. to July 31 at 2 a.m. also put a stop to other lawbreaking, such as possession of illegal narcotics, drunken driving, traffic offenses, and violation of parole and probation. In addition to the arrests, law enforcement personnel made 277 vehicle stops and issued 56 citations. In five separate drug seizures, they confiscated 9.52 grams of marijuana, 28.43 grams of cocaine, 1.96 grams of methamphetamine and three grams of "psychedelic" mushrooms.

The teams also impounded various other crime-related items, including vehicles, ammunition, four firearms and $2,500 in cash.

More photos from the sweep can be found on the San Diego Sheriff’s Department Facebook page

It seems Carlsbad will be a safer place with these routine sweeps done by the Carlsbad Police, effectively lowering local crime.
