J. Henry Mohr A fourth generation San Franciscan, born July 12th, 1919 died
peacefully on May 17, 2009 at the Forum in Cupertino, CA. Hank is survived by
Beverly, his wife of 61 years; son Craig Arthur Mohr; daughters Carla Mohr
Raffetto and Andrea Mohr Gandolfo; five granddaughters Nicole Katherine Mohr,
Stephanie Jane Mohr, Katherine Antonietta Raffetto, Christina Marie Gandolfo and
Grace Ottem Gandolfo and daughter-in-law Seran Osibov Mohr and son-in-laws
William Raffetto and Steven Gandolfo. Hank was predeceased by brothers Warren D.
Mohr and Russell Mohr. He was raised in San Francisco and attended California
School of Mechanical Arts and Wilmerding School of Industrial Arts. In 1938 he
entered Stanford University and graduated in 1941 with a degree in Geology &
Mining. Immediately following graduation he attended the Naval Officer's
Training school at Harvard and became an ensign. He served on two destroyer
escorts, the Eisele and the Harry L. Coral, taking part in many battles in the
Pacific. He concluded his nav al career as a lieutenant commander on the USS
Harry L. Coral. Hank met Beverly shortly after returning to San Francisco, and
after several short moves they settled in Palo Alto where they raised their
family and resided for 47 years. Hank was a gracious host who enjoyed
entertaining family and friends for a barbeque on their patio. These events were
usually marked by the ringing of his naval ship's bell. His career involved the
design of swimming pools and the manufacturing and distribution of swimming pool
equipment. He was co-founder of Nor Cal Engineering in Redwood City, CA which
eventually had branches in the U.S., United Kingdom and Germany. In 1971, he and
his wife started Discus Inc., a firm that exported pool equipment and design. He
traveled extensively in Europe, South Africa and the Pacific. Hank's great love
was the mountains, especially the Sierra Nevada Range. He traveled the John Muir
Trail twice, once as a young man and again many years later. His love of the
mountains was rewarded when the family bought a vacation home in Arnold, CA. His
last years in retirement were spent happily at the Forum in Cupertino, gazing at
the eastern slope of the Santa Cruz Mountain Range. A celebration of Hank's life
is currently being planned. Remembrances may be sent to Second Harvest Food
Bank, ATTN: Development Dept., 750 Curtner Ave., San Jose, CA 95125 or the
non-profit of your choice.
