PhotoStuart H. Smith Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy (Retired), who lived in Cupertino, CA died Sept. 19, 2009. He was 89 years of age. Admiral Smith was born in San Francisco, and was a fourth generation Californian. He grew up in Palo Alto, where he attended Channing Grammar School and Palo Alto High School, and was the first Eagle Scout in Troop 57 of Palo Alto. A graduate of UC Berkeley (1941), the Harvard Business School (MBA 1951), and The War College (1963). The Admiral's 32 yr. career in the U.S. Navy was served with high distinction. Numerous awards and medals marked his service afloat and ashore. Most exceptionally, of these, he was twice decorated with the prestigious Legion of Honor. Stuart was predeceased by his first wife, Joy Smith, and is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Harriett Hills Smith, and his daughters: Caraly (Dave) Higuchi of Pasadena, Sandra (Jack) Montgomery, and Beverly Smith of Pacifica. His kindness, charm and love comforts us in this time of loss and his beautiful spirit will be forever celebrated. A private family service will be held at a later date.
