Arle Jean (Bader) Brawn, daughter of Dr. Otto and Rose (Gruebele) Bader, was born January 7, 1930 in Jamestown, North Dakota and moved to Lodi, California as a six year old. She attended Garfield, Lincoln & Needham schools and graduated from Lodi High School in 1948. Arle Jean attended the Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church and directed the church choir. She attended Westmar College in LaMars Iowa, Redlands University and UOP graduating with a degree in Music and a minor in Education.
Arle Jean taught 8 years at Needham and Leroy Nichols schools in Lodi. Arle Jean married John Melvin Brawn Jr. on June 19, 1955 in the Salem EUB Church in Lodi. She continued to teach in Lodi until her children arrived. She moved to Sunnyvale in 1960 and San Jose in 1983. She taught in the Sunnyvale school district 22 years, including 12 years in special education.
Arle Jean played the organ and organized the Chancel Choir, directing it as a volunteer at the Good Samaritan United Methodist Church in Cupertino, California.
Arle Jean served in the United Methodist Women in a variety of positions at the local church, district and conference levels. She attended Annual Conferences and General Conferences of the UMC.
Music, church work and teaching were her passions. Her unique ministries touched thousands of people through music and teaching.
Arle Jean died peacefully December 14, 2008 of complications following back surgery. She was surrounded by her immediate family in her final hours.
Her memorial service was held December 21, 2008 at the Good Samaritan United Methodist Church in Cupertino, CA and was interred at the National Cemetery in Dixon on December 30, 2008.
Arle Jean was preceded in death by her baby brother, Dr. Harry Bader of Lodi.
Arle Jean is survived by Mel, her husband of 53 years, her sons John of San Jose, CA and Robert of Gig Harbor, WA; grandchildren Sean, Christina, David and Elizabeth; brother Dr. Robert Bader of Lodi, sisters-in-law Marge Bader of Lodi and Joan Cudd of Napa; nephew Dr. Chris Bader of Lodi, nieces Dr. Amy Bader of Lodi, Kathleen Stevans of Walnut Grove and Cindy Meagher of San Rafael; cousins Stanley Gruebele, Don Levey and Diana Matthies of Lodi, Sharon Papineau of Lathrop, Jim Gruebele of Roseville, and Sandra Starkey of Moraga, as well as 35 other Gruebele and Bader cousins outside the immediate area.
Gifts in memory of Arle Jean may be given to the Arle Jean Brawn Memorial Carillon Fund at the Good Samaritan United Methodist Church. www.goodsam.info
