Demirlioglu's goal gives Mats tie with Cats |

When
Baris Demirlioglu turned a pass from senior teammate Clayton Pugh into a
goal on Feb.1, the Monta Vista junior did something that only one other
Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division player had
accomplished this season.
Demirlioglu's second-half score against
El Camino leader Los Gatos was only the second goal allowed to a
division opponent by the Wildcats. Furthermore, the tally allowed the
Matadors to do what no other El Camino team had accomplished against Los
Gatos--a tie. For the first time in eight games, the Wildcats did not
leave the field with a win. Instead it was a 1-1 deadlock.
Monta
Vista improved to 5-2-2 in league and 9-4-3 overall. The Wildcats, after
bouncing back into the win column with a 4-0 shutout of Fremont two
days later, finished the week at 8-0-1 and 14-0-2. The Matadors, with 17
points, were in third place in the El Camino standings, five points
behind second-place Santa Clara (7-1-1, 10-4-3).
Fremont, which scored a 1-0 win over Lynbrook on Feb. 1, finished the week at 4-5 and in fourth place with 12 points.
In
De Anza Division action, Homestead junior Faraz Danandeh scored a goal
off Yuta Arai's assist to give the Mustangs a 1-1 tie with Milpitas on
Feb. 1. Homestead's record moved to 4-4-1 in the division and to 7-8-2
overall.
In girls soccer, Monta Vista improved to 5-2-2 with a
scoreless deadlock against Los Gatos. The Matadors finished the week
solidly in third place behind Mountain View and Los Gatos.
