William E. Hargreaves

ORANGE, CA - William E. Hargreaves, 87, peacefully passed away on Sunday under Hospice Care in Orange, CA. William was born on October 10, 1921, to the late George and Lillian Hargreaves in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated Sioux City High School in 1940. He earned medals in basketball and track events. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and George, and his sisters, Marian and Dorothy. He is survived by a sister, JoAnn. The family moved to Glendale, CA, where William worked for the Lockheed Aircraft Corp. as a riveter. During WW II he served in the Army Air Force stationed in Laredo, TX, at an air base. He reached the rank of sergeant and was a mechanic and gunnery instructor. He attended Michigan State University where he met his first wife, the late Margie F. MacKenzie. They married on November 3, 1944. They had a son, Michael R. Hargreaves Sr., who resides in Mishawaka, IN. William worked in Lansing, MI, as a sheet metal smith and installer for Hager-Fox and later Sloane Heating and Air Conditioning Companies. In 1964 William married his second wife, Mary Jean Hansen-Hunter. They moved to Stanton, MI, where William ran his own heating and air conditioning business on Dickerson Lake. Retiring in 2003, they moved to Orange, CA. The surviving family includes his wife, Mary; stepdaughter, Terry (Orange, CA); his son, Michael R. (Sharon) Hargreaves Sr.; four grandchildren, Lori Lampert (Ted), Kathi Allan (Scott), Tami Cashman and Michael R. Hargreaves II (Sandi), all of Mishawaka. He has seven great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Lauren, Zachary, Kelsey, Madison, Mac and Thea. William loved bowling, golf, fishing and playing the electric organ. Cremation services will take place in Orange, California. His ashes will be interred in Lansing, MI. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 360 in Mishawaka or to the National Fallen Firefighters Fund.
