Police Ask for More Help in Solving Murder of East Palo Alto Activist at San Mateo Mall
Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the fatal shooting of an East Palo Alto community leader in the parking lot of a San Mateo shopping mall last week to come forward with information.
No one has been arrested in connection with the June 9 murder of 54-year-old David Lewis outside the Hillsdale Shopping Center, but detectives believe there are witnesses who haven't yet contacted police or who may remember something after hearing of the investigation.
San Mateo police Sgt. David Norris declined to release details of the investigation because he doesn't want to compromise the case.
"They're still working on leads," he said.
In the meantime, friends and family have scheduled a memorial for Lewis for 2 p.m. Sunday at Costano Elementary School at 2695 Fordham St. in East Palo Alto.
A 5 p.m. community dinner will follow at the East Palo Alto nonprofit Free At Last, which Lewis co-founded. The organization's services include substance abuse treatment and transitional housing.
The nonprofit is located at 1796 Bay Road. Both the memorial and dinner are open to the public, according to the organization.
