Jacqueline Schuldes Baatz
Resident of Los Altos
Music teacher,
died peacefully surrounded by family at her Los Altos home on July 15 from a
stroke following open heart surgery. Jackie was born in Hammond, Indiana in 1920
to Alfred and Mae Schuldes. She attended Hammond public schools and developed
her love for music and golf at an early age. In high school she won first place
in the state music competition and when she wasn't practicing she earned money
playing golf. Jackie attended Depauw University on the President's music
scholarship, graduating in 1942. Although there were no intercollegiate sports
for women at that time, she played every intramural sport offered. Her first job
was as music supervisor for the Hammond K-8 schools. She also worked in
operations, crew scheduling and meteorology at United Air Lines in Chicago,
where she met her husband, Bill Baatz. They wed in 1944 and were married for 65
years. Jackie and Bill shared wonderful times together on the golf course, at
the bridge table and traveling the world.
Music was always a big part of
their lives. Jackie continued to pass on her love of music to young people until
2 months before her death. While Jackie and Bill raised their 2 daughters,
Jackie was active on the PTA, school music boards and the Girl Scouts. After
their move to California Jackie played golf year round and won 5 club
championships at Stanford, and multiple championships at Santa Teresa and Spring
Valley golf courses. She made 5 holes-in-one, including one at Pebble Beach.
Jackie served on the Course Rating Committee for national and state golf
tournaments. She was a faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church and served in
the choir for 30 years. Her family and many friends will remember her energy,
strength, competitive spirit, loyalty, friendliness and positive attitude.
Jackie is survived by her husband Bill, daughters Carol Hooper (Jim) and
Janet Darrow (Larry), her sister Geraldine Kaldem, grandchildren Kent
(Jennifer), Steven (Heidi), Bill, Lyndsey (Matt) and Brian, and her
great-grandchildren, Christian, Brooklyn, and Kensington.
A memorial
service will be held Saturday, August 21 at Christ Episcopal Church in Los Altos
at 11am. Donations in her memory can be made to the Friends of Music fund at her
church or the
American Heart Association .

Shirley Mae Liljegren
Resident of Los Altos
August 21, 1924-June 30, 2010
Shirley Swanson was born in Evanston, Illinois, the second of three children of Oscar Swanson & Esther Ericson. She graduated from Evanston High School in 1942 where she operated the school store. While attending the youth group at Emmanuel Methodist Church in Evanston she caught the eye of B-25 Captain Robert V. Liljegren. They engaged during the mid-point of his 1941-1945 Air Force career & married on February 11, 1950.
Shirley & Bob moved to a third floor walk-up apartment near Northwestern University, awaiting their first son. Bob became a pilot with United Airlines, based in Chicago, soon after completing Air Force duties in North Africa & Asia. He convinced Shirley to visit San Francisco en route to Honolulu, Hawaii on their honeymoon. Inspired to change they uprooted for a ranch-style home on Benvenue Avenue in Los Altos in 1951.
Shirley & Bob became early members of the Los Altos United Methodist Church which continued to be a focal point throughout her life. Over decades she contributed significant volunteer hours to church functions & outreach programs.
Shirley had three more sons. In 1959 they built a larger home on Black Mountain Court in Los Altos, land formerly used as an apricot & almond orchard. From this home she organized neighborhood social gatherings & planned family vacations. She traveled through the Inward Channel to Alaska; Israel, Egypt, Europe, Russia; to Williamsburg & other destinations representing North America's historic past. Locally, she was drawn to Carmel, the Shakespeare Festivals in Ashland, Oregon, Yosemite & the Scandinavian town of Solvang. She was an excellent cook & devotee of Julia Child, also passionate about knitting, needlework, gardening, designing Halloween costumes & making handmade toys.
Shirley leaves behind Bob, her husband of 60 years; sons - Peter, Mark, Todd & Doug; daughter-in-law, Lisbeth; granddaughters Sonja & Chloe; & her brother Lane who lives in Evanston, Illinois. Her older sister Arlene passed in 1992. As a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister & friend, she will be missed beyond measure but her memory lives within all of us.
Her Memorial Service is on Monday, July 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Los Altos United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalene Avenue.
