Betty D. Flanagan
Retired Oakland Unified School District Teacher Betty D. Flanagan beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, neighbor, and friend departed her earthly life on October 10, 2008 in Oakland, CA. She served as a dedicated teacher with the Oakland Unified School District for over 37 years. She influenced the lives of countless students who attended: Frick Jr. High School, McChesney Jr. High School, Lowell Middle School and Castlemont High School. She devoted her talents and efforts to providing the students of Oakland with an education that would prepare them to become tomorrow's leaders. She is survived by Vester Flanagan Sr.; stepmother Alice Sheriff; her two daughters Valerie and Vicki; one son, Vester; four sisters Carolyn, Brenda, Sharon, and Pearl; two brothers Fred and William; two grandchildren, Hadiyah and Miles; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Services will be held Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 11am at CP Bannon 6800 International Blvd., Oakland, CA 94621.

Frank Goodson of Oakland, CA passed away in Walnut Creek on September 8, 2008. He was a native of Yoakum, Texas and a graduate of Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas. Frank lived in Oakland for over 60 years where he and his late wife, Alma, owned and operated the Watkins Products store on Shattuck Avenue for nearly 50 years. He was known to many in the community as the "Watkins Man". In the early 1990's Frank retired from his second career working at the University of California, Berkeley. Always busy, Frank spent his time involved in the Democratic Club, the Prince Hall Masons (he was a 33rd Degree Mason) and, as a long time member of Parks Chapel AME Church, and the workers union at UC Berkeley. Survived daughters, Frances Goodson of Oakland, Marva Goodson Hamilton (Jerome) of Elk Grove, CA and grandchildren Nashua, Natasha and Naleah of Elk Grove. Quiet hour will be Sunday, September 14 from 5pm to 7pm at Harris Funeral Home, 1331 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley. Funeral Service will be Monday September 15, 11:00, at Parks Chapel AME Church, 476-34th Street, Oakland. Interment at Rolling Hills Cemetery, Richmond. Elbert Lee Bullock Resident of Rodeo Elbert L. Bullock ("Bull") passed away September 11, 2008 in Oakland after a two year battle with cancer. He transitioned this life surrounded by family and friends. Elbert was the youngest of five children born to Dorsey Bullock, Jr. and Gladys (Jones) Bullock. He was born in Houston, Texas January 19, 1934 and resided there until his family moved to San Diego, California in 1943. Elbert is predeceased by his mother, Gladys, his father, Dorsey Jr. his stepmother, Emma, his brother Alfred, and three sisters Ella Mae, Earnestine, and Ruby. In 1945 the Bullock family moved to Caruthers where Elbert attended Caruthers District schools. In his sixteenth year, his family moved to Fresno, California where Elbert enrolled in and graduated from Edison High School. As a high school Senior, Elbert received a scholarship to attend Fresno State College graduating from college in June 1957. Although he excelled in football, track and field events during his school years, music was Elbert's first love. He began playing the tenor saxophone as a young man. Growing up on his family's farms Elbert earned money during the summers to purchase his first horn. Playing with various jazz bands in the Fresno area during his high school and college years provided him with sufficient income for him to marry his high school sweetheart his senior year of college. Following college graduation Elbert enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in order to fulfill his military duty. He was named to the All Marine Corps Football Team. After two years he returned to his first teaching job at his high school alma mater. Elbert retired in 1997 after serving 35 years with the State of California. He began his career with the State serving in many positions which included Teacher, Parole Agent, Employment Development Department (EDD) Manager, Assistant Warden and finally as Administrator on the Board of Prison Terms. Retirement found Elbert enjoying boating on the "Dirty Delta" with friends and family. He was a founding member of the Ebony Boat Club. He also enjoyed traveling to various places in the United States as well as foreign countries. The "Bull" will be missed by many, many relatives and friends including his wife, Yvonne (Harvey) of Rodeo, CA., three daughters, Paula Bullock, Emeryville, CA., JoAnna Bullock. Oakland, CA., and Lauren Bullock, Rodeo, CA., four grandsons: Dayna Stephens, Karter Strickland, Kyle Strickland, Keenen Haggerty, one granddaughter, Kyya Stephens Hawkins, and two great grandsons. Special family members include Larry Cormier, the Washington Brothers: Edwin, Richard, Anthony, and John, a niece Gladys Moore, sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Bullock, God- son, Alfred Bullock and cousin, Miflin Jones. Special friends include Reginald Pulley, Clark Bridgman, and Jeffrey Fikes. Visitation will be Thursday, September 18, 2008, 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Imani Community Baptist Church, 3300 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland. Funeral services will be Friday, September 19th, 2008 11 a.m. at Allen Temple Missionary Baptist Church, 8501 International Blvd., Oakland, CA. Burial will follow at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito, CA. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be sent to United Negro College Fund, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Scholarship Fund, or Kaiser Hospital Palliative Care unit in Oakland, CA.
