Gum Den (Anna) Au July 17, 1926 - August 29, 2009 Resident of Oakland Born in
Chungsan Province, China, known to her friends as either Den or Anna, she passed
away peacefully after a valiant 5-year battle with colon cancer. Preceded in
death by her husband of 45 years, Hing Chung (Hanford) Au, in 1992, she is
survived by her six children, Dick Au, Honolulu; Sylvia Au Strickland, Benicia;
Mabelle Au Douglass, Oakland; Eileen Au Mendez, Oakland; David Au, Oakland; Don
Au, San Jose, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Her absence is deeply felt
by her 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. After her marriage to Hing
Chung in Canton, China, in 1947, she arrived in Oakland, California, with a 7th
grade education and contributed to the family's welfare working as a seamstress.
With hard work, determination, and a strong partnership they were able to forge
several businesses over the years beginning as a green grocer, corner grocer,
butcher, and garment factory owner. Her greatest passions in life were cooking,
mah jong, Chinese soap operas, and her family. She reveled in the family
gatherings and took pride in everyone's accomplishments. During the year 1970's
and 1980's, she sponsored several siblings and their families from China. The
family would like to thank the Asian Pacific Home Care and Hospice Network's
Kelly, Wanda, Hanna, Becky, and May. Because of the wonderful care they bestowed
on her, her sense of humor remained intact despite her declining health.
Services will be held on Friday, September 4, 2008, at 10 a.m., at Chapel of the
Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland. Internment will follow immediately at
Mountain View Cemetery, 5000 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland. In lieu of flowers, the
