Obituary : Kenji Nakatani Print E-mail
NAKATANI, Kenji
June 5, 1929 - September 17, 2009
Kenji passed away, peacefully, September 17, 2009 at 10:30am in his Sacramento home, with his children at his bedside. He met his final challenge, a two-year fight against an ultimately tougher opponent, cancer, on his own terms. He fought with all he had, quietly, uncomplaining, and with an inner strength that showed in his eyes, until the end, at age 80 years. Amazingly, he did this with an absolute minimum of pain suppressors throughout his entire two-year struggle, even unsupported by oxygen. Kenji demonstrated strong heart, tireless lungs, absolute will and resolve during his fight. A life-long Frank Sinatra fan, we can hear Kenji sing: "I Did It My Way". And he did. Kenji didn't talk, he just walked. Born in Sacramento, Kenji graduated from Sacramento High School in 1948 and lived his entire life in Sacramento, except for four years internment at the Tule Lake Relocation Camp, during World War II. He even brushed this injustice aside saying: "I just lifted weights all day long with my friends". After internment, he spent his spare time playing pool at his favorite pool hall. Owner of iconic Sacramento Japanese confectionary "OSAKA-YA" on 10th Street (the original store front sign is displayed in the Sacramento History Museum in Old Sacramento), and in business for more than 46 years, Kenji could be counted on to deliver the best hand-made manju year round, famous snow cones in the summertime, and komochi during New Years. He gave employment to many dozens of hard workers during these same 46 years. Before his business ownership, Kenji did farm work, was a United States Postal worker, and was part owner of a local laundromat. He worked hard his entire life. A United States Army Veteran of the Korean War, Kenji was a member of Veterans of Foreign War Post 8985. With family origins in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, Kenji was a member of Wakayama Kenjin Kai, in Sacramento. Kenji was preceded in death by his father Torataro and mother Otoku; his wife, Asako (Sato); his elder brother David Kiyoshi; and his younger sister Jane Miyoko (Tsuchida). Kenji is survived by his sister-in-law Yachio Nakatani (Hatanaka), who also helped raise Kenji as a child; his nephews and nieces, June Yaiko Kim, John Seji, Betty Kiyoko, Nancy Sachi Kunst, Glenn Masashi, Michael Tsuchida, Ricky Tsuchida, and all of their children. Kenji is also survived by his children, Alan (Shirley), Joanne Rabe (Victor), John (Diana), daughter and business partner Linda. Also leaving behind beloved grandchildren, Clint, Douglas, Chandra, Alan Jr.,April and Scottie, David and Yoshi. He loved all of them so much. Kenji proved that hard work, quiet determination, and the spirit of "I Can Do This" can overcome much of what life throws at you. He was ... an inspiration. Memorial services will be held Friday, September 25, 2009, 2:00pm at Buddhist Church of Sacramento, 2401 Riverside Blvd. (916) 446-0121. Arranged by GEORGE L. KLUMPP CHAPEL OF FLOWERS.
