The Oakland Athletics announced their final roster moves Saturday, and will
be without two key pitchers in Justin Duchscherer and Joey Devine to start the
season.
Duchscherer, the team's projected Opening Day starter, was placed on
the 15- day disabled list after electing to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his
right elbow last week. His recovery time is expected to take a minimum of six
weeks.
Devine, expected to at least share the closer's role this season,
was placed on the 60-day disabled list after missing a good deal of the spring
with elbow soreness. He suffered a setback Monday and was eventually diagnosed
with a sprain that was expected to keep him out a minimum of three weeks.
In related moves, Oakland optioned pitcher Gio Gonzalez, infielders
Daric Barton, Jack Hannahan and Cliff Pennington, as well as outfielder Chris
Denorfia to Triple-A Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League.
The A's
also selected the contracts of pitchers Brett Anderson, Andrew Bailey and Trevor
Cahill from Double-A Midland of the Texas League. Both Anderson and Cahill,
neither of whom has any major league experience, are slated to start the season
in Oakland's rotation.
