Salinas police search for man who tossed gun while fleeing

Salinas police said they are looking for a person who threw out a handgun Sunday night while running away from officers on the 900 block of Acosta Plaza.

At 7:41 p.m., police said, officers from the department anti-gang Violence Suppression Unit found Alberto Ramirez, an 18-year-old known gang member and another male looking over the wall onto Rider Avenue.

They said officer approached the two males and detained Ramirez. The second suspect, police said, led officers into a pursuit. During the chase, they said, the fleeing male tossed a handgun in an area where children were present within the apartment complex.

Police said the officer stopped pursuit and stayed with the gun for fear that one of the children would pick up the weapon. They said Ramirez was cited for trespassing. Police said officers are still searching for the second individual who escaped officers.
