NDNU’s School of Business and Management will kick-off its “Distinguished Speaker’s Series 2008-2009” with a panel discussion exploring how CPAs positions continue to evolve as the economy plummets and individuals look to them for more than just tax advice.
The University’s “Distinguished Speaker’s Series,” offers a series of motivational and inspirational talks by leaders of major local businesses. NDNU and the CalCPA Peninsula Chapter Emerging Professionals Committee will co-host the discussion, “CPA: A License for Your Career,” to address changing trends in the field of accounting, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. in the Ralston Hall Mansion Ballroom located on the NDNU campus.
“It’s not just about taxes anymore,” said NDNU professor, Peter F. Young. "Today's CPAs have to wear several hats including the usual coordinator of the Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, regulations, SEC reporting, a little human resources, and even some community outreach. They must posses multiple skills beyond just accounting, because of the changing nature of American business.”
“They should be current and educated on retirement issues, estate and financial planning, and portfolio management as even more is at stake with the unstable economy," Young added.
Panel topics will include financial and estate planning. Four well-known local CPAs will participate in the discussion; James M. Knight, CPA/PFS with Vista Wealth Management; Carol W. Ach, CPA, MBA; Anthony Rozenvasser with Seiler LLP; and Parisa Nesva Derani, CPA, who will moderate the discussion.
Knight began his career in the personal financial services practice at Pricewaterhouse Coopers and then moved to a local investment advisory firm as a vice president and portfolio manager before moving to Vista. He is a Registered Investment Advisor.
Ach has 30 years experience helping individuals with their tax, estate, and financial planning needs. She is a member of the CalCPA Estate Planning Committee. She started her career with national and regional firms before becoming a sole practitioner.
Rozenvasser graduated from UC Berkeley in 2002 with a degree in Business Administration. He then joined Seiler LLP, and was certified as a CPA in 2005. He is currently a manager working on trust returns and partnerships with high net worth individuals.
Derani has more than 14 years experience in public accounting, working with high-net-worth individuals and closely held businesses in areas of tax, accounting, and consulting. She began Nesva Derani & Co. in early 2002 to pursue a life-long dream of practice in public accounting after working with BDO Seidman, MyCFO & PricewaterhouseCoopers.
