George H. Kennison Beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, died
peacefully at his San Mateo home on May 29, 2008. He bravely fought pancreatic
cancer for eight months. Born July 30, 1921 in Toledo, OH, George spent most of
his 86 years in California, residing first in Hollywood and Beverly Hills, later
moving to Piedmont where he graduated from high school in 1939. Before joining
the U.S. Navy, he attended U.C. Berkeley and worked for the Southern Pacific and
Western Pacific Railroads. George received his B.A. and M.A. from S.F. State. He
taught in the S.F. Unified School District for over 22 years, affectionately
known to students as "Mr. K." His sense of fun and humor gave him a special
connection with children. In 1949 George met his sweetheart and favorite dance
partner, Patricia Miller, at a Valentine's Day Social in Oakland. Married June
30, 1950 they moved to Pacifica and raised three children. George will be
remembered as an ingenious Jack-of-all-trades and a man with a remarkable range
of knowledge and interests which always ensured lively and thoughtful
conversation. He loved classical music, opera and stage musicals. For decades he
and his wife have attended the SF Symphony, the SF Ballet, and the Lamplighters
series. Science, art, history, travel, gardening and old trains were all special
interests. George is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia; their three
children, Merideane of Anchorage, AK, Karl of Elko, NV, and Bradley of San
Rafael; seven adoring grandchildren: Kaley, Garren and Marielle Volper, Ruth and
Heather Kennison, Alexander and Sierra Kennison; nephew, Douglas Bartman of
Walnut Creek; niece, Marjorie Russell of Concord, CA; sister-in-law, Dorothy
Livingston of Erie, PA; and other loving relatives across the country. He was
preceded in death by his sister, Mary Bartman of Walnut Creek, and his brother
Frank Kennison of San Jose. George brought wit, song and laughter to any
gathering and will be deeply missed by those whose lives he touched. The family
wishes to thank friends, family and neighbors who offered love and support
during these difficult months, the wonderful Redwood City Kaiser Oncology staff
and the Vitas Hospice nurses who provided tender care and assisted the family. A
Memorial Service is planned for Mon., June 16, 1:00 PM at Hope Lutheran Church,
600 W. 42nd Ave., San Mateo. Memorial donations may be made to the
American Cancer Society, the American Heart Assoc. or the Nature
Conservancy.
