Obituary : Ann Marie "Nan" Long PDF Print E-mail
Ann Marie "Nan" Long died peacefully in her home early Sunday morning. She was 94. Born in Burlingame, she was a life-long resident of San Mateo. Nan graduated from Burlingame High School and the University of California at Berkeley, where she received a Bachelor's degree in home economics. After raising three children, she became a special education teacher and enjoyed her work for over twenty years at Los Amigos School in San Mateo. She retired alongside her husband at the age of 62, and enjoyed a retirement full of travel and family visits all over the world. Nan loved to travel and often referred to her San Mateo home as "home base". Nan was a founding and lifelong member of the Transfiguration Episcopal Church in San Mateo, active in the St. Clare Guild and a member of the California Teachers Association. She is survived by her husband, Virgil; her children Roger, Gordon, and Lenore; sister-in-law Maxine Andersen; her grandchildren, Thomas, Jennifer, Jay, Sean, Andy, Wendy, Pia, Paul and Anders; and seven great-grandchildren. Nan was well-loved by all who knew her and brought a smile to many, many more. We will remember her for her unique spirit, enduring wit and love of life. Memorial services will be held on Monday, August 25th at 2pm at the Transfiguration Episcopal Church. The church is located at 3900 Alameda de las Pulgas Avenue, San Mateo (on the corner of 39th and Alameda). All are welcome to attend. Reception will follow.
