Harold Matthew Varni 1932 - 2009 Passed into Heaven in the
early morning of May 4, 2009. Born in San Mateo, CA, Harold spent most of his
young years in South San Francisco. He graduated from Serra High School in 1950
where he played for their undefeated championship football team in 1949. Hal
served in the United States Coast Guard from 1953-1955. He spent most of his 35
working years with Pacific Telephone & Telegraph and held many titles and
levels of management. Hal is survived by his beloved wife Shirley of 34 years.
He was devoted to his children Kelly Mathews (Rex), Traci Lancaster (Nick
Leras), Phil Varni (Brandy). From a previous marriage Hal was father to Kenny,
David, and Diane Varni. Hal loved his grandchildren, Michael, Nicholas, Matthew,
Justine, Kyle, Brett, Travis, and his great-granddaughter Brianna. Hal and
Shirley moved to San Jose in 1976 where they resided until moving to Rough and
Ready, CA in 1988. While enjoying the country, Hal became involved with the
Rough and Ready Fire Dept where he fought fires and rose to the rank of Captain.
He was a proud member of the Lions Club and the Elks Lodge. He was an avid
hunter and world traveler. Hal was loved by all that knew him. Viewing will
begin on Saturday, May 9 at 1:00 pm and on Sunday, May 10 at 1:00 pm followed by
a Vigil at 7:00 pm at Oak Hill Funeral Home's Chapel of the Oaks. A Funeral Mass
will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1200 Redmond Ave., San Jose on
Monday, May 11 at 9:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate
donations in Hal's name to the Parkinson's Institute, 675 Almanor Ave.,
