Joan Michele Blaess Ellingson Resident of San Mateo Born Sept. 22, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa. Died Oct. 29, 2009 at Mills-Peninsula Hospital of complications from ovarian cancer. Predeceased by her parents, Dorothy Severn Blaess and Norman Blaess and by her in-laws, Kathryn Lingren Ellingson and Glenn Ellingson. Survived by her husband of 46 years, Ed Ellingson, and by daughters Amy Ellingson and Ann Ellingson Castro. Also survived by sister Susan Blaess Dulik (Mike), daughter-in-law Allison Danzig, son-in-law Juan Castro, cherished grandson Joaquin Castro, and by sister-in-law Elaine Ellingson Ware and nephews Glenn, Michael (Carolina), David and Gary Ware. Joan's family moved from Des Moines to Millbrae in 1955 and to San Bruno the following year. She attended Capuchino High School. Upon graduation in 1960, she worked at Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco. She married Glenn Edward Ellingson, Jr. on July 27, 1963 and they settled in San Mateo. Joan was an exceptionally talented and dedicated homemaker, wife and mother. She also worked at the family business, Ellingson's Sport Center, until it closed in 1984. In 1989, she began working at Collective Antiques of San Mateo "for fun" as she often said. She remained there for 17 years, making many close friends. Joan was known for her abundant energy, mirthful wit, discipline, sense of organization and thoughtfulness. She never missed an opportunity to send a card or a note to a friend or family member. Joan was an avid traveler. She and Ed especially loved London, visiting the city more than twenty times over the years. She was an extraordinary cook, hostess and baker and she will be remembered for her legendary cookies, fabulous dinner parties, backyard barbecues and holiday meals. She was the heart of our family and she will be missed and remembered by many. The family thanks Joan's skillful, caring and dedicated doctors who gave her three good years, and the wonderful nurses and staff (ICU and Oncology) at Mills-Peninsula and at Hematology and Oncology Associates, San Mateo. Services to be held at Sneider & Sullivan & O'Connell's Funeral Home in San Mateo; visitation Mon., Nov. 2, 6-9 PM; funeral service Tues., Nov. 3, 11 AM.
