Peninsula's "million-dollar baby" Print E-mail

After an initial rush of female boxers following the release of ‘Million Dollar Baby,’ Nancy Ramirez is one of few that stuck with the sport.

Call it the “Million Dollar Baby” effect.

 

The critically-acclaimed 2004 movie, starred Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood about an amateur female boxer who, under the tutelage of a down-and-out trainer, rises from anonymity all the way to a professional title match. No doubt that movie inspired many females around the world to get into boxing.

 

“As soon as that movie came out, a lot of girls started showing up to the gym,” said Rick Nava, a Redwood City Police Activities League boxing coach. “But Nancy is the only one who has stuck it out.”
