Obituary : William J. Burns Print E-mail
William J. Burns passed away peacefully at Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara, California, on Sunday, November 1, 2009, as a result of a head injury he had sustained in an accident at his ranch two weeks before. He was 68 years old.
Bill was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky, to Catherine and Russell Burns. He traveled extensively because his father was in the Army. Bill graduated from Frankfort American High School in Germany. From there he joined the Marine Corps and went to Security Guard School in Washington, D.C. His first assignment was in Khartoum, Sudan, Africa, in 1962, where he served as an Embassy Guard. Following a year of service, he transferred to Colombo, Ceylon, for a year and then to Vietnam, under Ambassador Lodge. He received his honorable discharge in March 1964. He met his first wife, Patricia Chandler, while serving in Sudan, and they married in 1965. Together, they had two children, Michael Wayne Burns and Kristy Lynn Burns. Later, he received his master's degree from Laverne University in California. In 1989, he married Christine Lawler. He and Chris ended up living in the hills of Lompoc, California, where they operated a 22-acre ranch while working together for the Santa Barbara County Sherriff's Department.
In 1965, Bill joined the Colorado Springs Police Department and from there moved to Garden Grove in 1966 and joined the Garden Grove Police Department. In 1972, he honorably served the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department as a Patrol Deputy and Sergeant, Narcotics Sergeant, Major Crimes Detective Sergeant, Training Bureau Lieutenant, and a SET leader. In 2003, Bill retired from the Sheriffs Department as a Lieutenant after serving for 33 years.
Bill and his wife Chris were active members of the Santa Ynez Valley equestrian community, spending countless hours with their many close and cherished friends.
Bill was a past president of Santa Barbara Trail Riders and a member of the Rancheros Visitadores Gringo camp, where he participated annually in the trek to Janeway Ranch.
Bill is survived by Chris, his beloved wife of 20 years, son Michael Burns, daughter Kristy Heller, son-in-law Michael Heller, and granddaughters Katelyn and Kiersten.
Bill had a love of animals, which included his horse, Mr. Mouse; his dogs, little Bernie and Nell; and his cat Kiki.
Bill was a beloved husband, father, and cherished friend. Bill will be greatly missed by family, friends, law enforcement colleagues, and his many riding camp mates.
To celebrate Bill's life, a gathering of family and friends will be held on Tuesday November 10, at Live Oak Camp, off Highway 154 near Rancho San Marcos Golf Course at 1:00 PM.
Arrangements are under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary and Crematory.
 
Obituary : Dianne Marie Richardson Print E-mail
On September 23, 2009, Dianne Marie Richardson was called to heaven in Santa Barbara, California after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
Dianne was born in Memphis, TN, on October 14, 1947, to Jimmie Louise Austin and George W. Sykes.
Dianne is survived by her husband Mack Guy Richardson, daughters Angela Michelle Richardson and Courtney Anne Richardson, son Marcus Guy Richardson and his fiancee Kyleen Paige Kenney and one granddog Sugar Richardson. Dianne is also survived by sister Pamela (Dave) Coleman, brother Ender (Tammy) Austin Jr., nieces and nephews Ender (Lenita) Austin III and Joycelynn Austin of Las Vegas, NV, Shanon and Alfonzo Hayes of Memphis, TN, and one great niece Chanel Hayes of Memphis, TN, and several other relatives.
Dianne graduated from Douglas High School in 1965 in Memphis, TN, and earned her bachelors degree in Sociology from Chapman University. She was an educator for more than 28 years, teaching in special education and communicable handicapped classrooms at Cabrillo and Lompoc High School, La Canada and Los Berros Elementary School.
Dianne was active in the Relay For Life Cancer Awareness Walks and a member of Trinity Church of the Nazarene.
Dianne is remembered for her passion for education, her joy of reading and her love for family and friends. She will be deeply missed by the friends and family whose lives she touched.
Visitation services will be held October 2, at the Starbuck Lind Mortuary Chapel from 4 pm to 7 pm. Memorial service will be October 3 at Trinity Church of the Nazarene, 500 block of North D at 10 am. The reception will follow at the Family Life Center. Donations may be sent to Coast Hills Federal Credit Union to the Dianne Richardson Memorial Fund.

EVELIA S. NAVA
June 10, 1986 – Sept 11, 2009

Evelia S. Nava, age 23, passed away Sept 11, at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital surrounded by her loving family.  Evelia was born in Santa Barbara to two loving parents Francisco and Luisa Nava; then raised in Lompoc since 3 years old.  Evelia attended La Canada Elementary School until the third grade and then graduated from La Purisima Concepcion Catholic School in 2000.  She graduated from Lompoc High School in 2004, where she participated in Madrigals, Mixed Choir, Dance Line and also performing arts where she was in musicals such as Little Shop of Horrors and Into the Woods.  Currently she was attending Santa Barbara Business College (SBBC).  Evelia worked at SBBC, Santa Maria Campus where she was a Financial Aid Associate. She loved to help the students out.
Evelia had a talent and passion for music.  She started playing her little tambourine at age three; then sang her first solo during her First Communion Mass. She was a very active member in the Spanish and English choirs at La Purisima Catholic Church where she either cantored, directed or played guitar. She also, directed, cantored and/or played guitar with the special events choir during Easter and Christmas seasons.
Evelia was a very active member at La Purisima Catholic Church, besides her passion for music, she was also involved in being an altar server, a proclaimer of the Word, preached and did music ministry at the Evangelization Retreats and also participated in liturgical dance.
Evelia was a very loving and caring person for all who knew her.  She never missed birthdays, and always sent e-cards to her friends, family and friends from work. When Evelia could get away she loved going to Disneyland with friends and family.  Now she will be at the Happiest Place in Heaven. She will truly be missed but always remembered thru her wonderful talents that God gave her and never ashamed to live out her Faith in God.
Evelia is survived by her mother & father, Luisa and Francisco Nava, brother Erubey (Alma) Nava , sister Veronica (Martin) Huizar and eight nieces and nephews: Joshua, Victoriana, Yessica, Athena, Alyssa, Mateo, Matias and Gabriela (whom she referred to as "my children").
The visitation will be Wednesday, September 16, from 6-8pm with the evening vigil at 7pm at La Purisima Catholic Church.  Father Tom Cook will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, September 17, at 10am at the church.  Interment will follow in the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.  The arrangements are in the care of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary.
