(1921 – 2008)
Jeanne K. Cochran, "NanaJeanne," succumbed from complications of pneumonia
after a prolonged hospital stay in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Wednesday, July 23,
2008. The beloved matriarch passed away much at peace, looking forward to seeing
her mother, father and son who preceded her in Heaven. She loved life and was
very thankful to have lived a healthy, independent 87 years, surrounded by
loving family and friends. Our family is blessed that God graced us with her
presence for so many years.
Jeanne Kathryn was born on March 22, 1921, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Ethlynn
Ella and Bryan Southern Egle. She grew up in Minnesota alongside her younger
brother, Jack, and many other family members in the Minneapolis area. NanaJeanne
loved to tell stories about her childhood with Great Grandma Pratt and her
Grandma Leonard and their families. She remembered being chosen in kindergarten
as the Sunday school reader to the rest of the class and continued through life
always as a very independent spirit with a wonderful sense of humor.
Jeanne and her family left Minnesota and eventually settled in California in
1946. Jeanne worked for the California Department of Embarkation during World
War II and told many stories of chauffeuring dignitaries to fundraisers in the
Los Angeles area in support of the war effort. Settling in Oxnard, Jeanne met
and married Malcolm (Mike) Cochran. They went on to raise their children, Rick,
Pam and Laurie, in the Oxnard area.
During her lifetime, Jeanne worked in administration at Oxnard Frozen Foods,
the Southern California Edison Co., and most recently was manager of Sunny Acres
Mobile Home Park. She loved acting for the Plaza Players Theatre Group in
Ventura County and was very articulate in the spoken and written word.
NanaJeanne always encouraged an "open door" policy at her home and truly
enjoyed her children's friends who came frequently to visit. Most of all, she
enjoyed getting together for large family gatherings, always cherishing time
with parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren and friends. She was
extremely proud of being a part of a five-generation party which was held when
her Grandma Leonard turned 100 years old! In May of 2008 she had finally decided
to retire and was looking forward to moving to Santa Barbara to be near
family.
NanaJeanne is survived by her brother, Jack Egle (sister-in-law Josie and
nephew Mathieu) of Paris, France; daughters, Pamela Cochran of Santa Barbara,
Calif., and Laurie Cochran Rosemond (son-in-law Harry Rosemond) of Olympia,
Wash.; grandchildren, Bryan Cochran (wife Marilyn) of Danville, Calif.;
Christine Cochran of Costa Mesa, Calif., Matthew Cochran (wife Imke) of Dubai,
UAE, Joshua Escalante of Santa Barbara, Kevin Escalante of Santa Barbara, and
Katie Cochran Rosemond of Olympia, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Emily Wikidal of
Coto de Caza, Calif., Ethan Cochran of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Leo-Alexander
Cochran of Dubai, UAE.
Per her wishes, family and friends are invited to a "Celebration of Life"
barbecue at Lake Casitas at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, in picnic area 12.
