BARBOZA, Anthony (Tony) Vernon Age 73, passed away at home in the early evening of August 15, 2008, following a heroic 5-year battle with cancer. He kept his good humor throughout. He was born April 30, 1935, in Santa Rosa, CA and lived his entire life in the same town. In his youth he was a foreman at the Santa Rosa Shoe Factory and had a career racing hardtops and endurance motorcycles. He remained a life long fan of Nascar. He tinkered with and babied his own tri-power 1965 red GTO convertible for 30 years. In 1968, he went into business as owner of Tony's Auto Upholstery, Cal Hobbies and Barboza Auto Sales. In 1990 he sold his businesses and focused on real estate investments until his retirement. A dedicated runner into his late 60's, Tony loved running in Annadel most, but also often ran along Santa Rosa Creek. He won many first place ribbons and medals in local races but felt running in and of itself was his greatest personal achievement. Known for his great humor, his love of gardening and hosting of family gatherings and celebrations, he especially delighted in his home and family in the last several years. He was affectionately called "Papa" by his grandchildren. Survived by life partner Dorothy Chapin of Santa Rosa; daughter Toni (Michael) Pump of Clear Lake; son Jim Barboza of Sonora; daughter Deedee Bettner of Guerneville; brothers Joseph and Severin Barboza and Stevie Mattews; step-daughter Rachel Chambers and step-son Tom Chambers of Santa Rosa, step-son Andrews (Renee) Chambers of American Canyon; grandchildren Jeffrey, Nick, Eric, Ajay, Amy, Nicole, Aleshia, Stephanie, Kayla, Travis, Sammy and great grandson Hunter. Predeceased by son Michael Barboza and his especially beloved dog, Squirt, who would climb ladders to be with Papa Tony when he was working on the house. A memorial service for Anthony Barboza will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Santa Rosa Memorial Park Chapel, 1900 Franklin Avenue, Santa Rosa, CA. Please refrain from wearing perfume or scented products. Special thanks to Dr. Fan Zhang of Kaiser Santa Rosa who "watched him like a hawk", to all the fantastic people at the infusion center at Kaiser Santa Rosa, and to Memorial Hospice. In lieu of flowers, a special act of kindness to an animal would be appreciated, or donation to Anthony's favorite charities, Hospice, Humane Society of Sonoma County or Redwood Gospel Mission of Santa Rosa. Arrangements under the care of SANTA ROSA MORTUARY,
