Driver admits to injuring cyclist in hit-and-run
A Northern California man is headed to jail after pleading guilty to a hit-and-run accident that left a competitive cyclist permanently brain damaged.
The April 2009 accident on Highway 9 in Saratoga left 24-year-old Ashley Jackson along the side of the road with serious head injuries.
Saratoga motorist Robert Schiro initially denied being behind the wheel when Jackson and her boyfriend, 41-year-old David Nelson, were hit. Nelson was not seriously injured.
Schiro pleaded guilty Thursday in Santa Clara County Superior Court to felony hit-and-run causing serious permanent injury or death, as well as two misdemeanors.
Prosecutors said the 70-year-old likely faces a year in jail when he is sentenced in October.
