Saratoga's OK means building to begin at St. Andrew's PDF Print E-mail
More classrooms and administrative offices are in the offing for St. Andrew's Parish and School, as church and education leaders work to replace inadequate facilities.  The Saratoga Planning Commission, at its Sept. 12 meeting, gave the green light to St. Andrews to construct a three-story building that will house classrooms and administration offices for the school, a two-story wing of 15 additional classrooms and a three-story building that will be home to parish offices and Sunday school rooms.

"Our school facilities are behind the times," said parishioner Marian Abbott of St. Andrew's, 13601 Saratoga Ave. "We'd like to get up to date."

Parishioners and school parents said the current buildings are too small and need infrastructure upgrades, such as a better heating system. The three buildings that were approved on Sept. 12 are part of a five-building addition for St. Andrews; the other structures are a gym/performing arts center and a parish center. The Saratoga City Council originally approved the five buildings in 2003 as part of a joint master facilities plan for the church and school. However, only the gym and parish center were constructed because there were not enough funds to carry out the project. The buildings were completed in 2006.

Currently, the school gym gets good use from outside groups, such as the Boy Scouts and the Saratoga Symphony, said head of school Harry McKay. Commissioner Susie Nagpal concurred with parents and parishioners about the need for new buildings, and she praised St. Andrew's for opening the gym to community groups.
