Vienna Teng holds benefit concert at hometown PDF Print E-mail

By Melody Zhang

On December 21, renowned singer-songwriter Vienna Teng returned to her hometown of Saratoga for a holiday benefit concert in Saratoga High School’s McAfee Center.

Teng and her sister Tiffany Shih, a 2006 alumnus from Saratoga High School, decided to organize the concert with Saratoga High’s Interact Club to raise funds for the construction of a school in Ghana. Teng explained at the start of the concert how her parents always taught her and her sister that the holidays were a time to be caring and thoughtful of others. The concert was put together mainly by Shih and Lawrence Choi, the Interact Club’s president.

“We’re expecting to get a full house,” said Choi before sale of the tickets began. Indeed, the theater was packed. Many SHS students attended the concert to show their support for Teng.

“I love the way her lyrics go so well with her piano accompaniment,” said junior Felicia Tang. “She sounds even better live than recorded.”

As with her past performances, Teng entertained the audience with little anecdotes about the next song she would be performing. Although the audience was a little cold compared to the usual crowd, it was extremely interesting to discover how Teng’s high school career had affected her songwriting.

Teng explained how one of her high school teachers, French teacher Kim Bergkamp, influenced her song “I Don’t Feel so Well” with the explanation that when one said they didn’t feel so well, they meant that they were having problems physically feeling objects. Her stories made many Saratogans in the audience feel much more connected with her.

Teng’s quartet consisted of Alex Wong (percussion/guitar), Dina Maccabee (violin/viola) and Jessie Ivry (cello). During the show, Dina Maccabee and Alex Wong each performed a piece composed with other groups. Their albums were sold in the lobby after the show and were warmly received by the attendees.
