The lights went
down, the curtain opened and for the next 90 minutes, more than 300 people were
enthralled with the world-premier performances of “Dancing with the Stars and
Planets, too” – a locally written and produced theatrical piece developed for
children and adults with special needs.
Bobbie Wallinger,
who teaches developmentally challenged adults through the SUSD School
for Adults and Alan
Short Center, wrote and directed the play – her
18th consecutive year of doing so. It’s no small wonder she has been
honored by the Stockton Arts Commission as Educator of the Year (which she will
receive tonight).
The play was
basically a music revue of dancing styles from the Charleston to the Twist to the “Boot Scoot
Boogie.” One particularly moving segment included a choreographed wheelchair
routine. Few people left without tears in their eyes.
SUSD is a proud
sponsor of this event each year. It truly is one of the most moving experiences
we have to offer. Congratulations Bobbie on another outstanding
effort.
