Ermina and her two brothers, Dominic and Michael (both deceased) were the
children of Pietro Januzzi and Erminia Serratore, both Italian immigrants. She
was married for fifty years to the late Howard Weil, an electrical engineer and
a musician. They moved from Racine, Wisconsin to Sunnyvale, CA. in 1955. She is
survived by both her sons, Robert and Richard, their spouses, Helene and Cherryl
, and her three grandchildren, Nadine, Kevin, and Brian. Erma had a lifelong
affiliation with the Catholic Church having been raised by German Catholic nuns
in Lake Superior, Wisconsin from early childhood through her formative years.
She overcame a great many obstacles in her life including living in the
orphanage, graduating from high school during The Great Depression, having her
husband drafted just as they were starting to raise a family, and the untimely
death of her two brothers. In spite of all these things, Erma had an incredible
love of life, an unquenchable thirst for knowledge , and a great sense of fun
that delighted all who knew her. Upon graduating from high school she wanted to
see the world even though it was during the Depression, so she scrimped and
saved so she could take a series of what were then called "escorted tours" and
went to Glacier National Park, the New York World's Fair, Yosemite,
Carlsbad,Yellowstone,Catalina Island, and the Grand Canyon. Erma was also a
master of many types of handcrafts including knitting, sewing, needle point,
crocheting, calligraphy, and copper tooling. In the early 1930's she started her
life long love affair with music and dancing. She mastered swing, ballroom,
country western, line dance, tap, jitterbug, and the tango. In her later years
(87) she learned the hula and entertained the "seniors" of Santa Clara County
with a hula dance troupe she belonged to. In recognition of these achievements,
an Erma Weil Dance Scholarship has been created at Ballet San Jose by her
granddaughter, Nadine. Erma was always very supportive of her family, was a
wonderful grandmother, and baked the world's best Christmas sugar cookies.
