Jean M. Farrell, 84 CARLSBAD --
Dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Jean
Farrell died peacefully on Sunday, August 7, 2011 after a long and tragic
illness. Jean was born in Chicago on March 9, 1927, but moved West with her
parents at the age of four, so she was really a California girl. She spent her
formative years in San Francisco and proudly attended Lowell High School, where
she was active in student affairs and served as Vice President of her Senior
Class. Then she went on to Berkeley where she attended the University of
California, was an active Tri-Delt, earned an Associate of Arts degree, and met
her future husband, Jim Farrell, whom she married in 1947. A business move took
them to Maryland in 1948 where daughter, K.C., and son, Steve, were born. They
moved back to California in 1955 to settle in West Covina where, in addition to
being a full-time mom, Jean was a volunteer at the Community Hospital. She was
also active in the Covina Junior Women's Club, serving as chairman of the Mental
Health Committee and volunteered at the Spadra Facility in Pomona. In 1964, the
Farrells discovered the beach and moved to San Clemente where Jean also
discovered golf, first at Shorecliffs and later at El Camino Country Club in
Oceanside. She was active at Our Lady of Fatima Church and served as Principal
of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. After K.C.and Steve had grown, she
worked part time as an optometric assistant at Griffin Optometric in San
Clemente and as a sales clerk and model at Ren Boutique in Laguna Beach. Both
were fun jobs. Upon retirement in 1986, they moved to Carlsbad to be closer to
the Club and the many friends they had made over the years at El Camino. It was
in Carlsbad that they found Sea Cliff, a village within a village, which
provided a host of new friends in this super friendly community. Jean served as
Chairman of the Neighborhood Watch Committee, preparing the neighborhood for the
natural disasters, which we have avoided so far, but for which we are ready.
Jean will be missed and forever loved by husband, Jim; daughter, K.C. (and
husband Chris) Koegel; son, Steve (and wife Pam) Farrell; grandchildren, Matt
and Kelly Koegel, and Kyle and Cassie Farrell; and great-grandson, Colby Koegel.
Jean's funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday August 15, at St.
Patrick's Church, 3821 Adams St. in Carlsbad, Calif. Friends are welcome.
Interment will follow at Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest for the immediate
family only. Jean and her family are grateful to Hospice of the North Coast and
St. Patrick's Church (both of Carlsbad) for their caring support.
